Overview
A pressure tank stores water under pressure so that a small draw-off — one tap, one cistern refilling — is served from the tank instead of starting the pump. Without one, the pump starts and stops constantly and the motor fails early.
It also smooths the pressure a building sees, which is the difference between a steady shower and one that surges every time the pump cuts in.
